Handmade in Britain Announces Dates for the Vibrant Handmade Oxford Event in 2023

Handmade in Britain Announces Dates for the Vibrant Handmade Oxford Event in 2023

Handmade Oxford is one of the biggest craftsmanship festivals in the countryside, attracting visitors from all over the UK. Summer 2023 will see its third edition and the organisers promise an unforgettable experience for everyone who loves handmade goods and foods or feels adventurous enough to try a craft on the spot.

Handmade Oxford 2023 Venue

As usual, the festival will take place in partnership with Waterperry Gardens, which is the official venue. The gardens are renowned for their beautiful landscape arrangement. Moreover, they make you feel like you are on the set of Netflix’s hit period drama – Bridgerton.

It is a place with a long and rich history. It was first made famous by Beatrix Havergal, who established her School of Horticulture for Ladies there in 1932. However, the house in the Gardens dates back to the Tudors and according to some historians, parts of it, even back to the Romans.

Since 2021, the spacious lawns of Waterperry Gardens have been home to the vibrant Handmade Oxford festival.

Handmade Oxford 2023 Dates

In its first two editions, the festival spread over 4 days, but Handmade in Britain have announced that this year it will be shortened by a day. Despite the shorter duration, the event promises a delightful programme and amazing selection of crafters from Oxfordshire and beyond. Being held in an outdoors venue, summer makes the perfect season for such a large gathering. The festival falls on Father’s Day weekend from 16th to 18th June. What a great idea for a family getaway, isn’t it?

Where to Stay in Oxfordshire

Waterperry Gardens are just a stone throw away from Oxford itself, but the nearby villages are an even more attractive destination for a short stay with their picturesque landscapes and peaceful atmosphere. If you are travelling as a family, we recommend booking a short let apartment in Whatley or a neighbouring village. You can find amazing holiday homes for hire in Oxfordshire with great amenities and excellent transport links. The convenience is there, the privacy, too, and the opportunity to fully relax, just like you do at your own home.

Things to Do at Handmade Oxford 2023

The festival is more than a display of the inspiring work of numerous talented crafters, farmers and traders. Visitors will have the chance to sign up for a variety of workshops, teaching them new skills and techniques. These will be adapted for different ages, so whether you want to keep your children busy or try a new craft yourself, you will get the opportunity to do it.

The festival mood will be supported by live music and performances from local musicians, bands and groups.

For those interested in sustainable living, the organisers have included a series of engaging talks and demonstrations in the event programme. A whole section of the festival is also dedicated to environmental sustainability and the development of green solutions as alternatives to commonly used plastic or non-recyclable products.

One of the highlights of Handmade Oxford has always been the delicious artisan food supplied by local farmers, bakers and cooks. The variety and flavours make this 3-day event a true jolly feast.

Oxford’s Hospitals Attract New Patients from across the Country and Abroad

Oxford’s Hospital Trust may have fallen by 2 positions in the national hospital chart last year, but it now attracts a record number of patients from across the country. The new trend is a point of pride, but also a concern for some local residents, who fear waiting times will become even longer. The NHS foundation trust in Oxford is formed of 4 hospitals with remarkable history and various specialised departments.

John Radcliffe Hospital

The John Radcliffe Hospital is perhaps the most famous in Oxfordshire. It is also one of the largest teaching hospitals, home to the Oxford University Medical School. The hospital is named after the 18th century physician John Radcliffe, who spent a large portion of his professional practice in London, providing private medical services to the rich. He built a sustainable fortune, which he then took back to Oxford and used for the establishment of the Radcliffe Infirmary.

Nowadays, JR hospital specialises in ophthalmology, paediatric care and it is the major trauma response centre for the Thames Valley.

Churchill Hospital

The Churchill Hospital is also one of the main research hubs in Oxfordshire and shares its facilities with Oxford University Medical School and Oxford Brookes University’s School of Healthcare Studies. It is, of course, named after one of the most iconic political figures in British history, Winston Churchill who was born in Blenheim Palace.

The hospital is renowned for its excellence in provision of cancer services, renal services, transplants, haemophilia, dermatology and palliative care. One of the main drivers for new patients from various places nationally and internationally is the Oxford Centre for Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism (OCDEM). This is a semi-NHS funded centre, which provides cutting-edge research on diabetes and metabolic diseases.

Nuffield Orthopaedic Hospital

Nuffield hospital cares for world-class athletes. The specialist services include orthopaedics, rheumatology and rehabilitation. This is one of the best places in the country for bone or joint transplants and surgeries. Complicated cases from elsewhere often get referred to Nuffield hospital, which makes it now one of the most sought after medical facilities for both private and funded care.

Horton General Hospital

The fourth hospital part of the Oxford Hospital Trust is Horton General. It serves the population north of Oxfordshire and the nearby areas. It has over 20 departments with some outpatient clinics regularly visited and run by the world’s best consultants.

The plastic surgery department is one of the most popular in the hospital among patients who do not live locally.

Accommodation During Travel for Medical Reasons

A lot of families travel to Oxfordshire for medical appointments, screening or treatment. The hospitals, however, cannot provide accommodation for family members of the patients. That means they need to make their own arrangements.

The most popular option during travel for medical reasons is renting short let accommodation close to the hospitals. Every family, who goes the extra mile to improve or secure the health of their loved one needs privacy and a comfortable place to rest and relax. Holiday lets in Oxfordshire tick all the boxes as they are fully serviced facilities, well connected to transport and local amenities.

Our short let accommodation in Wheatley is 10-15 minutes away from John Radcliffe Hospital, Churchill Hospital and Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre. Travelling to Horton General hospital would take around 40 minutes by car.

Harry Potter Themed Adventure in Oxford

Harry Potter is the symbol of the millennials’ childhood. Today, more than 10 years after the last movie was released, people of all generations still want to see the legendary locations the story was filmed in.

London is one of the major places where filming took place. There are tour packages featuring locations like King’s Cross Station, Piccadilly Circus and Borough Market. All these places, however, are extremely crowded almost constantly. It takes away from the experience for a lot of people and many report it makes them feel rushed in a way.

Luckily, Harry Potter was filmed in several spots across the country. Quite a few of the really important and magical places are in Oxfordshire. The area is easily accessible by various means of transport and it is perfect for short trips and weekends away. What a marvellous half-term adventure would that be for you and your family!

Hogwarts

The School of Witchcraft and Wizardry is supposed to be a Scottish boarding school, but the scenes of the Harry Potter movies were filmed in Christ Church in Oxford. The staircase of the church appeared in the first film of the series, where Harry, Hermione and Ron, along with other freshers, met Professor McGonagall for the first time.

The magnificent dining hall from the movies, with floating candles and enchanted ceiling, was inspired by the Christ Church dining hall. Visiting this space is only possible if you have bought a ticket to the church.

The Infirmary

The school hospital where Harry spent some time after his first fight against Voldemort is actually the Divinity School in Oxford. The same location also appeared in the third movie “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban” and in the “Goblet of Fire”, where Professor McGonagall was teaching Ron how to dance.

A self-guided tour through the school can be arranged here

The Library

The scenes in the Forbidden section of the Hogwarts library were filmed in the Duke Humphrey’s Library, which is part of the Bodleian Library. Walking between the shelves hosting hundreds of old books and manuscripts will certainly take your imagination to a magical land, even if that’s not where Harry spent his school years.

The Snape Tree

A little north from Oxford is located Blenheim Palace – a very popular destination for tourists and filmmakers. On the grounds of the palace there is an ancient cedar that was used for the scene portraying Sirius Snape as a student being bullied by Harry’s father. Today, this tree is officially called “The Harry Potter Tree”.

Blenheim Palace offers a lot of opportunities for entertainment for the entire family. They run frequent events and while you are on your Harry Potter themed adventure, you can also budget a couple of more days to explore the palace in detail.

Fine Dining Experience in Oxford with Michelin Stars and Exquisite Cuisine

Fine Dining Experience

Oxfordshire is a truly magical place that never disappoints no matter what you are looking for. Whether you are a keen shopper, nature lover, culture explorer or fine dining connoisseur, the heart of the English countryside can live up to the expectations.

When thinking of Michelin-star restaurants, perhaps the image of the capital is the first thing that pops up in your mind. Not that London lacks such places, but the best restaurant awarded with the prestigious star is right here in Oxford. It’s the dream-come-alive of the incredible French master chef Raymond Blanc. Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons is more than a restaurant. It incorporates chef Blanc’s vision of organic produce, unmatched gastronomic experience and extraordinary hospitality.

The Restaurant

Since its establishment in 1984, the restaurant has retained its 2 Michelin stars and welcomes guests not only from across the country but from various international destinations, too. The wine list features around 600 specially selected wines from around the world. The unique feature of the menu is the fresh organic produce, grown on the grounds of Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons and its spacious gardens. You can book a table for lunch or dinner at least 3 months in advance, unless you are staying at the hotel. The lunch menu has 6 courses, while the dinner is made up of 7. Vegetarian and vegan options are also available – one of the reasons the restaurant was granted the special Green Michelin star.

The Educational Experience

Raymond Blanc believes in the connection between exquisite taste and quality of ingredients. That is why the products used in the kitchen of his famous restaurant are grown on site in the 2-acre garden. Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons isn’t just a place for fine dining. Here, enthusiast and professional chefs can sign up for short courses in the gardening school. The lessons and practical sessions include sustainable cultivation techniques, tree pruning, edible flower selection and then taking all that to the kitchen when the final link of the garden-to-plate process is complete. There are also courses adapted for children, encouraging them to explore the journey of a seed and how it may be utilised on the plate.

The Hotel

Chef Blanc wanted a full experience for his guests, so the restaurant is part of the Belmond  hotel with 32 rooms in a manor building. Where to Stay in Oxfordshire

If staying at the Belmond hotel is out of pocket, or you simply prefer an extra level of privacy, we can recommend booking a short let apartment in Oxfordshire. Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons restaurant is located 8 miles from Oxford and just a 7-min drive from our holiday let flat in Wheatley. For a fraction of the cost at Belmond, you can enjoy a lavish atmosphere, undisturbed peace and just the right level of privacy. The accommodation is fully serviced and close to a variety of local amenities.

If you are up for another gastronomical experience, you can visit the other Michelin-star restaurant in Oxfordshire, the Nut Tree Inn in Murcott. That’s just a 20-min away by car from Wheatley and you will witness incredible natural landscape views on the way.
